What is Product Data?

Product data are all of the attributes associated with a product. For example, a cell phone case has a brand, make/model that it fits, colour, material, etc. Think of all of this information on a spreadsheet in columns and rows. Most product data can be exported into this format.

Why Optimize Product Data?

If you stop think about your ecommerce site as a pie chart, how many pages are product pages? Often this is over 90%. For example, let’s say that a site has the following standard pages: home, about, contact, shipping & returns, privacy. In this same example, let’s say the site has 45 product pages. This would mean that 90% of the pages are product pages. Every one of those product pages is a key landing page, so why do most ecommerce sites not put in the effort to treat them as landing pages. Optimizing your product data optimizes your product pages for search engines to pick up on. Also, these are key landing pages since the user has landed on a product page that is further down the sales funnel. This can make a huge difference for your sales.

Why is Involved in Optimizing product data?

Depending on the number of products on a site, optimization can be done manually or automated. Product data tends to be very structured in data sets which means that changes can often be made in bulk. However, sometimes the strategy needs to be more granular and each product needs to be looked at one at a time for maximum optimization.
